our Story

Family owned since 1979.

Sandy MacDonald originally purchased the building in 1979 when it was known as ‘The Fort Hotel’.

If you were a patron of the Hodel, as it was commonly referred to, you would have crossed paths with Sandy. He was a man of few words but his presence was Big. and personally bounced many a patrons out the door.

Over the years there were many changes; from live music to exotic dancers, to a DJ and full-blown night club. Along with several renovations, the western era being the most memorable. On one occasion someone even rode their horse through the bar.

The building is also considered a Queen’s Landmark and was called the Queen’s Hotel when it was initially built in 1890. On January 21, 1913 it burnt to ground and was later rebuilt that fall, eventually being renamed the Fort Hotel in 1933. Almost 100 years later to the day it burnt down once more, eventually being rebuilt and reopened to the public under the new name ‘The Bears Den’. It’s name being drawn from Sandy’s nickname ‘The Bear’.

Sandy passed away on December 23, 2004 leaving his bar and legacy to his daughter, Jodie. His loss was a huge hit to his family as well as the Fort Saskatchewan community, however Jodie has done a remarkable job keeping his memory alive. Possessing many of the same qualities as her late father, Jodie treats her customers and her staff like family, with many being long standing regulars and supporters of the bar.
